The beautiful swaying hemp fields make a big impression on many tourists who cycle through Groningen in the summer. However, it is 'fiber hemp', an age-old crop that is making a comeback for many sustainable products. And recently also for a particularly mild and relaxing cup of hemp tea.
* Fascinated by the hemp plant
When sustainability consultant Esther Molenwijk discovered the hemp plant, she quickly became completely captivated by it. The centuries-old crop can be grown organically with ease and requires little water. Moreover, hemp absorbs a lot of CO2 and improves the soil. The strong natural fibers can be used for many sustainable applications. "I was immediately fascinated by it", says Molenwijk. "How is it possible that this durable, strong crop has been so forgotten? I decided to change course and commit myself to the rediscovery of this plant."
* Nice and relaxing cup of tea
When she found out that the Groningen farmer Albert Dun did not use the leaves and flowers of his hemp plants, the idea of hemp tea was soon born. The tea turned out to be wonderfully mild, fresh and slightly sweet with an intense aftertaste. In addition, it has a naturally relaxing effect (without 'high' of course!). In 2015, Esther started a crowdfunding campaign that provided the starting capital to make the first hemp tea harvest come true. Dutch Harvest can now be found in hundreds of (nature) stores.

Dutch Harvest hemp tea is available in a pure variant and three blends. These have been carefully put together with the help of a tea sommelier. Of course with only pure, organically certified herbs. No sugars, no flavors, no ... nothing. Free of aromas and caffeine, full of the power of hemp.
* Packing at a sheltered workshop in biodegradable packaging
The packaging is made of bioplastic and paper made from agricultural waste. So the bag can go to the organic waste and composts completely. Dutch Harvest is packed at a social work company, which also takes care of shipments to shops.

Dutch Harvest is now growing rapidly and hemp tea is also being discovered outside the country's borders. "I am proud that we succeeded in making the public aware of this local product," says Molenwijk. Toen zij er achter kwam dat de Groningse boer Albert Dun de bladeren en bloemen van zijn hennepplanten niet gebruikte, was het idee van hennepthee al snel geboren. De thee bleek heerlijk mild, fris en lichtzoet met een intense nasmaak. Daarnaast heeft'ie van nature een ontspannend effect (zonder 'high' natuurlijk!). In 2015 startte Esther een crowdfunding campagne die het startkapitaal opleverde om de eerste hennepthee-oogst waar te maken. Inmiddels is Dutch Harvest in honderden (natuur-)winkels te vinden.

Dutch Harvest hemp tea is verkrijgbaar in een pure variant en drie melanges. Deze zijn zorgvuldig samengesteld met hulp van een theesommelier. Natuurlijk met uitsluitend pure, biologisch gecertificeerde kruiden. Geen suikertjes, geen smaakstoffen, geen... niets. Vrij van aroma’s en van cafeïne, vol met de kracht van hennep.
*Inpakken op een sociale werkplaats in een biologisch afbreekbare verpakking
De verpakking is gemaakt van bioplastic en van papier op basis van landbouwafval. Dus het zakje mag bij het GFT, en composteert daarin volledig. Dutch Harvest wordt ingepakt bij een sociaal werkbedrijf, dat ook zorg draagt voor de verzendingen naar winkels.

Inmiddels is Dutch Harvest flink aan het groeien en wordt de hennepthee ook buiten de landsgrenzen ontdekt. "Ik ben er trots op dat het gelukt is om het publiek bekend te maken met dit lokale product.", aldus Molenwijk. "En wat is er nu leuker dan zo'n heel proces in de hand te hebben, van plant tot klant!"
