I first make spontaneous spots of watercolor paint on watercolor paper. (or larger on canvas and with acrylic stains) This is covered by a transparent sheet on which I draw with a dip pen and Indian ink. I do this intuitively. The stain gives me an idea or I just start, and in the process a Stain Thing is created! For example, it could be a (fantasy) animal or a figure.
