The heart of our company beats in the depths of the sea. There, a good 40 meters below the water surface, sponges grow - a true miracle of nature. With their silky texture, they are durable, versatile and extra gentle on the skin. Our story begins with the fascination for these creatures:
In 1897, Gustav Croll and Theodor Denecke decided to import raw sponges from the Greek Mediterranean to Bremen and refine them by hand here. We still do it today - but in the meantime we have expanded our product range to include sustainable wellness and household products. We, that is Peter, Nina and Sara Hankiewicz, third and fourth generation of the company. Our mission: sustainable skin and body care products that feel good and in harmony with nature.
It was a long way to get there. Originally, others also wanted to take this step: when it was founded, Croll & Denecke was not alone with the idea of trading in sponges. At that time there were still over a hundred companies in Germany. Only a few of these are left - many did not find successors, others did not survive the wars. Croll & Denecke was spared both. In 1928 our grandfather joined the company, followed in 1958 by our father Peter Hankiewicz. Since 2008 and 2019, in addition to Peter Hankiewicz, the daughters Nina and Sara Hankiewicz have been part of the management board.
family and business? That doesn't go together, some say. It's different with us. We are strong as a family, it has always been like this. At Croll & Denecke, the third and fourth generations work hand in hand – for a long time we even did it under one roof. We learn from each other and grow together. Many years of experience meet new ideas and impulses. This brings us further as a company - and makes our products and working methods constantly better.
We are still successful with this today: As a wholesaler for natural sponges, we are the market leader in Europe. We export our products from Bremen Vahr to over 50 countries - and every year there are more. Das Herz unserer Firma schlägt in den Tiefen des Meeres. 1897 beschlossen Gustav Croll und Theodor Denecke, rohe Schwämme aus dem griechischen Mittelmeer nach Bremen zu importieren und hier in Handarbeit zu veredeln. Das machen wir noch heute so – mittlerweile haben wir unsere Produktpalette aber um nachhaltige Wellness- und Haushaltsprodukte erweitert. Wir, das sind Peter, Nina und Sara Hankiewicz, dritte und vierte Betriebsgeneration. Unsere Mission: nachhaltige Haut- und Körperpflegeprodukte mit gutem Gefühl und im Einklang mit der Natur.
Bis dahin war es ein langer Weg. Den wollten ursprünglich auch andere beschreiten: Zur Gründungszeit war Croll & Denecke mit der Idee des Schwammhandels nicht allein. Damals gab es in Deutschland noch über hundert Firmen. Davon sind nur wenige übrig geblieben – viele fanden keine Nachfolger, andere überstanden die Kriege nicht. Von beidem blieb Croll & Denecke verschont. 1928 stieg unser Großvater mit in die Firma ein, 1958 dann unser Vater Peter Hankiewicz. Seit 2008 und 2019 sind neben Peter Hankiewicz auch die Töchter Nina und Sara Hankiewicz in der Geschäftsführung dabei.
Familie und Unternehmen? Das passt nicht zusammen, sagen manche. Bei uns ist das anders. Als Familie sind wir stark, das war schon immer so. Bei Croll & Denecke arbeitet die dritte und vierte Generation erfolgreich Hand in Hand – lange haben wir das sogar noch unter einem Dach getan. Wir lernen voneinander und wachsen zusammen. So trifft langjährige Erfahrung auf neue Ideen und Impulse. Das bringt uns als Unternehmen weiter – und macht unsere Produkte und Arbeitsweisen stetig besser.
Damit sind wir bis heute erfolgreich: Als Großhändler für Naturschwämme sind wir in Europa Marktführer. Unsere Produkte exportieren wir aus der Bremer Vahr in über 50 Länder – und jedes Jahr werden es mehr.
