The Glencairn glass isn't the only glass on the market designed specifically for whiskey drinking. (Riedel and Norlan Glass, for example, also manufacture such glassware.) While there are numerous styles of such glasses available, the Glencairn is the first style to be endorsed by the Scotch Whiskey Association, and is used by every whiskey company in Scotland and Ireland.
Old-fashioned tumblers, snifters, and nose scoops are other types of glasses commonly used for whiskey drinking. The traditional style of whiskey glass is an old-fashioned cut crystal whiskey glass, an iconic design that is still the most widely used type of whiskey glass. However, a tumbler doesn't hold the aromas for the drinker's experience as much as the other styles, which bend inward towards the top of the glass. While not all drinkers will find the strong aroma of such glasses desirable, inward curved glasses are often preferred by connoisseurs who consider the aroma particularly important to a whiskey's experience.
In 2006 the glass won the Queen's Award for innovation.
