This chocolate bar is not only delicious, but also good. Madagascan chocolate maker Menakao proudly produces its chocolate on the island, using only local ingredients. Unfortunately, this is rare, even for artisan chocolate - it is estimated that less than 5% of the world's chocolate is produced in the same country where the cocoa is grown. By making the chocolate in Madagascar, in addition to growing the cocoa on the island, Menakao generates approximately 4-5 times more benefit to the local Madagascan economy than Fair Trade.
The packaging shows the portrait of a Merina woman (from the highlands): They inhabit the region of Antananarivo, the so-called Imerina. They are said to have conquered the highlands after their arrival in Madagascar in the tenth century, from Indonesia or Malaysia. Only later, during the reign of Andrianjaka, Antananarivo became the capital of the kingdom. The name Imerina was first pronounced in the late 16th century by King Ralambo (1575-1610), who baptized his kingdom "Imerina Ambaniandro" (the land under the sun).
