mekhada started importing Kazuri ceramic jewelry from Kenya and its own collection in 1998. The Kazuri necklaces are elaborately handcrafted. Each bead is molded from clay by hand, painted and fired at least 2 times. The result is an unmistakable jewelry that has found many followers all over the world.
Little by little, the range of mekhada was expanded. The creation and maintenance of jobs according to fair trade criteria has always been the main objective.
BAWA Hope is a particularly interesting recycling project. 'Wings of Hope'. In the slums of Nairobi, old brass doorknobs are melted down in simple ovens. This results in modern jewelry that the founder Anne designs with constantly new ideas.
The Colombian Tagua jewelry is also popular, made from the corozo, the seed of a palm tree.
A new and at the same time "old" recycling idea comes from India. The tradition of turning worn saris into blankets has a new aspect today: wooden beads are covered with saree fabrics, this is how the colorful kantha jewelry is created.
