About Mandinka Natural Products
New and exciting initiatives in Africa
Mandinka Natural Products I / S was born on the basis of common chemistry, vision, adventure, humor… .and perseverance….
Finn Andersen and I, Dorte Eiersbo, met each other Greenland specifically Ilulissat, where I managed a guesthouse. Finn had a company that set up radio chains and lived at the guesthouse when he was on those edges. I have been a project maker all my working life mostly within the educational world. My last major project was GAIA Museum Outsider Art in Randers in 2002, where I was manager until I retired in the autumn of 2015.
Finn and I quickly found out that we both had a sense of adventure and humor in common and were not afraid to throw ourselves into something new. Finn told about his project in Gambia. Among other things, he had built a lodge with 9 holiday apartments with his own bare fists near the sea near the capital Banjul. Fantastic performance in a foreign country. He needed to get an extra source of income to retain the staff in the lodge throughout the rainy season where there are not many tourists.
I therefore went there with Finn in June 2018. We researched a lot, and fooled ourselves in between, but slowly we narrowed the project to what we wanted - namely to squeeze cosmetic oil from seeds from moringa and baobab. It required Finn to build, and now we have both storage, press room for cold pressing of our oils, rinsing room and cold room for the finished oil at the lodge.
It is very different to work in Gambia, where time and credibility are understood in a different way than in Denmark.
The Gambia is Africa's smallest country, half the size of Jutland, and poverty is widespread. It was an English Crown Colony until 1965, when it became independent. Gambia has a very young population, widespread illiteracy, very few natural resources and high unemployment, but great zest for life and hospitality.
In that way, it made sense to start a sustainable project in Gambia. And hopefully in collaboration with several villages to build moringa farms, where Mandinka I / S can buy the seeds of the villages.
We buy and process Gambia's raw materials in Gambia, shop locally, create jobs and build know-how.
