The history of The Best Drop Ever
The history of De Beste Drop Ever starts in 2015. Or no, actually in 1990: when Klepper Sr. (who was then simply called Willem Klepper, Klepper Jr. was not even born yet) his candy stall on the market of Alkmaar.
In 2015 Klepper Sr. so 25 years on the market. And on the occasion of that, he wants to make the best licorice ever. To give away for free to all its customers. With so much experience, he knows exactly what he likes and what people like: a full sweet licorice with a hint of salmiak somewhere in the background for the necessary spice and a pleasant bite. Not too firm, not too soft. We would like to call it a bit of a nostalgic bite. Reminiscent of drugstore liquorice from a bygone era.
He puts the ingredients on paper and goes there with Klepper Jr. to a liquorice manufacturer. After experimenting for a while with the quantities and the drying times, they have it done: the tastiest licorice ever is ready to hit the market.
Klepper & Klepper share out
The plan is to give away 1200 bags. Those 1200 bags will be gone in no time. Klepper & Klepper appears to have gold in their hands. Black gold. The clients of Klepper Sr. are they chatty with Klepper Sr. agree: this is indeed the tastiest licorice ever. Head and shoulders. The people keep coming back. From all over the country. Because every now and then you find a lost Zeeuw on the market in Alkmaar. And they also like liquorice. Klepper Sr. had to disappoint people: the best licorice ever was an anniversary licorice. It will never return.
But that was outside of Klepper Jr. calculated…
No gluten and gelatin, but lots of love
Klepper Jr. understands that there was more to this licorice. Much more. Especially because it contains two things: gluten and gelatin. Gelatin is not included in the recipe. And the normally used 'wheat starch' has been replaced by potato starch, which also makes it gluten-free.
This licorice, Klepper Jr. understands. (who had studied commercial economics and yes, then you understand things. And you see opportunities), this licorice comes at exactly the right time. No gluten and gelatin, but a lot of love: that is exactly what people want today. And they are also happy to cycle for that.
The Best Drop Ever
The Klepperdropje, as the tastiest licorice ever has come to be popularly known, must be given its own packaging. And a name that tells people what to expect. A name that also appeals to people who have never heard of Klepper Sr.'s market stall. have heard. And so Klepper & Klepper, after careful consideration, decides what to call this licorice. They decide not to hide the natural bravado that is so characteristic of market people: this is The Best Drop Ever. Not anymore. Not less.
After having a package made that ensures that The Best Licorice Ever gets just the right dryness, Klepper Jr. around town and country to get The Best Drop Ever in the better specialty store. His method is as simple as it is daring: he knows that once people have tasted it, the licorice will sell itself. He puts some boxes in his trunk, visits the specialty stores where he thinks: that's where our licorice must be. He hands each owner a box and says, “Try it. If you want more, you know where to find me.” He hands over his ticket and walks out of the specialty store, knowing he'll get a call a few days later. If he can bring a few more of those boxes.

And that's how The Best Drop Ever can be found throughout the Netherlands within a year. Not in the supermarkets anyway. There is often a supermarket on the line. Or is there one in the mailbox. And they know: if you are in the supermarket, sooner or later they want to stunt with your liquorice. And stunts, says Klepper Jr. please, do you in the circus. There is no stunting with The Best Drop Ever. It can also be very dangerous to stunt with a licorice in your mouth. Before you know it, it's going down the wrong way. No, The Best Licorice Ever, you prefer to eat the way you used to enjoy a good cigar: sitting in your favorite chair.
The Next Chapter: The Best Salty Licorice Ever
After The Best Drop Ever, as it is called, achieved national coverage, it's time for the next chapter. The Best Licorice Ever also deserves a salty variant. And that, Klepper Sr. knows, is no mean feat. Because salty liquorice quickly becomes too salty. And salty licorice quickly becomes too dry, making it rock hard. In addition to the perfect recipe, you should also experiment with drying times.
But before they go into the licorice lab to experiment, Klepper & Klepper searches for the best salt in the world. They eventually find that in unrefined Celtic sea salt. This is extracted by hand and is rich in minerals. Some say it is good for your blood pressure. Others say that's bullshit. But nonsense or no nonsense: it is the ideal basic ingredient for The Best Salty Licorice Ever. Time to visit the lab.
It takes a while before Klepper Sr. one hundred percent satisfied. And the word 'even' in this case is an understatement of the caliber 'the sea is wet'. It takes so long and Klepper & Klepper goes back to the drawing board so often that Klepper & Klepper's liquorice manufacturer threatens to throw in the towel. But Klepper & Klepper insist: the licorice has to be perfect. Every now and then, they return to the market in a batch. And they see how enthusiastic their customers are. And they are often enthusiastic. But not enthusiastic enough.
Somewhere in the middle of 2018 the time has finally come. The Best Licorice Ever has a salty variant. Of course again without gluten and gelatin, but with unrefined Celtic sea salt.
And the beauty of this licorice: lovers of salty licorice love it, but even people who normally don't like salty licorice at all think it's fantastic! This is because there is still a hint of sweetness in it. The Celtic sea salt works as a flavor enhancer. And the bite is so great too. When it comes into the packaging, it may even be a bit too fresh, so that it is perfect after a few days in the packaging: not hard, but firm.
The Best Honey Drop Ever
The success of De Beste Drop Ever does not exactly go unnoticed. More and more newspapers and (trade) magazines are reporting about it. Word of mouth is growing at lightning speed. Shops put boxes of The Best Drop Ever in their windows to draw customers in. Even De Telegraaf reports extensively about The Best Drop Ever. Klepper & Klepper think in 2019 that it is time for a new challenge. And that is perhaps the biggest challenge so far: creating The Best Honey Drop Ever.
How many really tasty honey liquorice is there now? Not very much. Because the same applies to honey licorice: if you don't have the drying time right, it quickly becomes a hard licorice. And if you don't get the recipe right, it will be too sweet. Or do you not taste honey. In short: it was time to drive the licorice manufacturer of Klepper & Klepper to despair once again.
But first the best honey in the Netherlands had to be found. Klepper & Klepper found them in the Biesbosch, at a small independent beekeeper who produces honey in an organic way. Without using chemicals and pesticides. And taking into account the environment of plants and bees. The bees happy, nature happy, Klepper & Klepper happy. And you happy. Because just the idea that it is all purely natural, such a licorice tastes better of course. Admit it. But to make a really tasty licorice from pure natural honey, step two is.
And step two did indeed take quite a while. But in the end it worked. On May 20, 2019, on World Bee Day, The Best Honey Drop Ever officially saw the light of day. Of course again without gluten and gelatin, but with 12% pure natural honey from the Biesbosch.
Cross the border
At the end of 2019, Klepper & Klepper decides that it is time to look beyond the borders. Because it is fun to conquer licorice the Netherlands out of nowhere with a licorice, it would be even more fun to get the rest of the world to use the licorice. We may be a unique country, but it's strange that they don't like licorice anywhere else. That's so strange, it's most likely wrong. In all those other countries they also like liquorice, they just don't know it. And they don't know, because they aren't familiar with The Best Drop Ever.
The Best Laurel Drop Ever
While looking across the border, Klepper & Klepper also set their sights on developing The Best Laurel Drop Ever. And the same applies to this: there is not yet a really tasty laurel liquorice. So that's exactly the kind of challenge Klepper & Klepper likes to get their teeth into. So that you can then sink your teeth into the result. In this case, in De Best Laurierdrop Ever.
Because laurel has a medicinal effect, laurel liquorice has never really disappeared. Laurel licorice works well against ailments such as colds, sore throats and lifeless hair. And of course, this wonderful little plant has the scent of invincibility, since the ancient Romans liked to drape a laurel wreath around their heads when they had won or conquered (or pretended to have won or conquered). But a really tasty laurel liquorice did not exist yet, according to Klepper & Klepper. "So we'll just have to fix that," said Klepper Sr., who is never afraid to right wrongs.
Their search for pure laurel oil ended in the southwestern tip of North Brabant at an organic laurel grower. After months of experimenting with recipes and drying times (and market research), De Beste Laurierdrop Ever arrived on the Dutch market at the end of August 2020. The beginning of an inevitable triumphal march.
Future music
So much for the story of Klepper & Klepper and The Best Drop Ever. We do not rule out that the Best Licorice Ever will have more flavors in the future. De geschiedenis van De Beste Drop Ooit begint in 2015. Of nee, eigenlijk in 1990: toen opende Klepper Sr. (die toen nog gewoon Willem Klepper heette, Klepper Jr. was nog niet eens geboren) zijn snoepkraam op de markt van Alkmaar.
In 2015 staat Klepper Sr. dus 25 jaar op de markt. En ter gelegenheid daarvan, wil hij het lekkerste dropje ooit maken. Om gratis weg te geven aan al zijn klanten. Met zoveel ervaring weet hij precies wat hij zelf lekker vindt en wat de mensen lekker vinden: een volzoet dropje met ergens op de achtergrond een vleugje salmiak voor de nodige pit, en een aangename bite. Niet te stevig, niet te zacht. Een beetje een nostalgische bite zouden we het willen noemen. Doet denken aan drogisterij-drop uit vervlogen tijden.
Hij zet de ingrediënten op papier en gaat er samen met Klepper Jr. mee naar een dropfabrikant. Na een tijdje experimenteren met de hoeveelheden en de droogtijden, hebben ze het voor elkaar: het lekkerste dropje ooit is klaar om de markt op te gaan.
Klepper & Klepper delen uit
Het plan is om 1200 zakjes weg te geven. Die 1200 zakjes zijn binnen een mum van tijd weg. Klepper & Klepper blijken goud in handen te hebben. Zwart goud. De klanten van Klepper Sr. zijn het roerend met Klepper Sr. eens: dit is inderdaad het lekkerste dropje ooit. Met kop en schouders. De mensen blijven terugkomen. Vanuit heel het land. Want zo nu en dan vind je een verdwaalde Zeeuw op de markt van Alkmaar. En daar houden ze ook van drop. Klepper Sr. moest de mensen teleurstellen: het lekkerste dropje ooit was een jubileumdropje. Het zal nooit meer wederkeren.
Maar dat was buiten Klepper Jr. gerekend…
Geen gluten en gelatine, wel heel veel liefde
Klepper Jr. begrijpt dat er meer zat in dit dropje. Veel meer. Vooral ook omdat er twee dingen juist niet in zitten: gluten en gelatine. Gelatine zit niet in de receptuur. En het normaal gebruikte ‘tarwezetmeel’ is vervangen door aardappelzetmeel wat het ook glutenvrij maakt.
Dit dropje, zo begrijpt Klepper Jr. (die commerciële economie had gestudeerd en ja, dan begrijp je dingen. En zie je kansen), dit dropje komt op precies het juiste moment. Geen gluten en gelatine, maar wel heel veel liefde: dat is exact wat mensen willen vandaag de dag. En daar willen ze ook met alle plezier even voor omfietsen.
De Beste Drop Ooit
Het Klepperdropje, zoals het lekkerste dropje ooit in de volksmond is gaan heten, moet een eigen verpakking krijgen. En een naam die de mensen vertelt wat ze kunnen verwachten. Een naam die ook tot de verbeelding spreekt bij mensen die nog nooit van de marktkraam van Klepper Sr. hebben gehoord. En zo bedenken Klepper & Klepper, na rijp beraad, hoe ze dit dropje moeten noemen. Ze besluiten de natuurlijke bravoure, die zo eigen is aan marktlui, niet onder stoelen of banken te schuiven: dit is De Beste Drop Ooit. Niet meer. Niet minder.
Nadat ze een verpakking hebben laten maken die ervoor zorgt dat De Beste Drop Ooit precies de juiste droogheid krijgt, reist Klepper Jr. stad en land af om De Beste Drop Ooit in de betere speciaalzaak te krijgen. Zijn methode is even eenvoudig als gedurfd: hij weet dat het dropje, zodra de mensen het eenmaal hebben geproefd, zichzelf verkoopt. Hij stopt wat dozen in zijn achterbak, bezoekt de speciaalzaken waarvan hij denkt: daar moet ons dropje liggen. Hij geeft elke eigenaar een doosje en zegt daarbij: ‘Probeer het maar. Als je meer wilt hebben, weet je me te vinden.’ Hij geeft z’n kaartje en wandelt de speciaalzaak uit, in de wetenschap dat hij een paar dagen later een telefoontje krijgt. Of hij nog een paar van die dozen kan brengen.
Verkrijgbaar in heel Nederland
En zo is De Beste Drop Ooit binnen een jaar in heel Nederland te vinden. Niet in de supermarkten trouwens. Geregeld hangt er wel een supermarkt aan de lijn. Of zit er eentje in de mailbox. Dat De Beste Drop Ooit niet in hun schappen mag ontbreken. Maar Klepper & Klepper wijzen dergelijke verzoeken altijd vriendelijk doch resoluut af. Ze willen dat De Beste Drop Ooit een beetje exclusief blijft. En ze weten: als je in de supermarkt ligt, willen ze vroeg of laat met je drop gaan stunten. En stunten, zo zegt Klepper Jr. graag, doe je in het circus. Met De Beste Drop Ooit wordt niet gestunt. Het kan trouwens ook heel gevaarlijk zijn, om te stunten met een dropje in je mond. Voor je het weet schiet het in je verkeerde keelgat. Nee, De Beste Drop Ooit nuttig je het liefst zoals je vroeger een goede sigaar nuttigde: zittend in je favoriete stoel.
Het volgende hoofdstuk: de Beste Zoute Drop Ooit
Nadat De Beste Drop Ooit, zoals dat heet, landelijke dekking heeft behaald, is het tijd voor het volgende hoofdstuk. De Beste Drop Ooit verdient ook een zoute variant. En dat is, weet Klepper Sr., geen sinecure. Want zoute drop wordt snel te zout. En zoute drop wordt snel te droog, waardoor het keihard wordt. Naast de perfecte receptuur, moet je dus ook experimenteren met droogtijden.
Maar voordat ze het droplab ingaan om te experimenteren, gaan Klepper & Klepper op zoek naar het beste zout ter wereld. Dat vinden ze uiteindelijk in ongeraffineerd Keltisch zeezout. Dit wordt met de hand gewonnen en is rijk aan mineralen. Volgens sommigen is het daardoor goed voor je bloeddruk. Volgens anderen is dat flauwekul. Maar flauwekul of geen flauwekul: het is het ideale basis-ingrediënt voor De Beste Zoute Drop Ooit. Tijd om het laboratorium op te zoeken.
Het duurt even voordat Klepper Sr. honderd procent tevreden is. En het woord ‘even’ is in dit geval een understatement van het kaliber ‘de zee is nat’. Het duurt zo lang en Klepper & Klepper gaan zo vaak terug naar de tekentafel dat de dropfabrikant van Klepper & Klepper dreigt om de handdoek in de ring te gooien. Maar Klepper & Klepper houden vol: het dropje moet perfect zijn. Zo nu en dan, keren ze met een batch naar de markt. En kijken ze hoe enthousiast hun klanten zijn. En die zijn vaak enthousiast. Maar niet enthousiast genoeg.
Ergens halverwege 2018 is het dan eindelijk toch zover. De Beste Drop Ooit heeft een zoute variant. Uiteraard weer zonder gluten en gelatine, maar dus met ongeraffineerd Keltisch zeezout.
En het mooie van dit dropje: liefhebbers van zoute drop vinden hem heerlijk, maar zelfs mensen die normaal helemaal niet van zoute drop houden, vinden ‘m ook fantastisch! Dat komt doordat er nog een vleugje zoet in zit. Het Keltisch zeezout werkt als smaakversterker. En de bite is ook al zo geweldig. Als ie de verpakking ingaat misschien zelfs nog iets te vers, zodat ie na een paar dagen in de verpakking perfect is: niet hard, maar stevig.
De Beste Honingdrop Ooit
Het succes van De Beste Drop Ooit blijft niet bepaald onopgemerkt. Steeds meer kranten en (vak)tijdschriften berichten erover. De mond-op-mondreclame gaat razendsnel. Winkels zetten dozen met De Beste Drop Ooit in de etalage om klanten naar binnen te halen. Zelfs de Telegraaf bericht uitgebreid over De Beste Drop Ooit. Klepper & Klepper vinden in 2019 dat het tijd is voor een nieuwe uitdaging. En dat is misschien wel de grootste uitdaging tot nu toe: het creëren van De Beste Honingdrop Ooit.
Hoeveel écht lekkere honingdrop bestaat er nu? Niet heel veel. Want ook voor honingdrop geldt: als je de droogtijd niet goed hebt, wordt het al snel een keihard dropje. En als je de receptuur niet goed hebt, wordt het te zoet. Of proef je geen honing. Kortom: het was tijd om de dropfabrikant van Klepper & Klepper weer eens tot wanhoop te drijven.
Maar eerst moest de beste honing van Nederland worden gezocht. Die vonden Klepper & Klepper in de Biesbosch, bij een kleine onafhankelijke imker die op biologische wijze honing produceert. Zonder daarbij gebruik te maken van chemische middelen en pesticiden. En rekening houdend met het leefmilieu van planten en bijen. De bijen blij, de natuur blij, Klepper & Klepper blij. En u blij. Want alleen al door het idee dat het allemaal puur natuur is, smaakt zo’n dropje natuurlijk al lekkerder. Geef maar toe. Maar om van puur natuurlijke honing een echt lekker dropje te maken, is stap twee.
En stap twee duurde inderdaad weer behoorlijk lang. Maar uiteindelijk lukte het. Op 20 mei 2019, op Wereldbijendag, zag De Beste Honingdrop Ooit officieel het levenslicht. Uiteraard weer zonder gluten en gelatine, maar met 12% puur natuurlijke honing uit de Biesbosch.
De grens over
Eind 2019 besluiten Klepper & Klepper dat het tijd is om eens over de grenzen heen te kijken. Want dropland Nederland uit het niets veroveren met een dropje is leuk, het zou nog leuker zijn om de rest van de wereld eens aan de drop te krijgen. We mogen dan wel een uniek land zijn, het is toch vreemd dat ze nergens anders van drop houden. Dat is zo vreemd, dat het hoogstwaarschijnlijk niet klopt. In al die andere landen houden ze ook van drop, ze weten het alleen niet. En ze weten het niet, omdat ze nog niet bekend zijn met De Beste Drop Ooit.
De Beste Laurierdrop Ooit
Terwijl ze over de grens keken, hebben Klepper & Klepper ook hun zinnen gezet op de ontwikkeling van De Beste Laurierdrop Ooit. En ook daarvoor geldt: echt lekkere laurierdrop bestaat er nog niet. Da’s dus precies het soort uitdaging waar Klepper & Klepper graag hun tanden in zetten. Zodat u vervolgens uw tanden in het resultaat kan zetten. In dit geval dus in De Beste Laurierdrop Ooit.
Doordat laurier een geneeskrachtige werking heeft, is laurierdrop nooit echt verdwenen. Laurierdrop doet het goed tegen kwaaltjes als verkoudheid, keelpijn en futloos haar. En verder kleeft er aan dit wonderlijke plantje natuurlijk de geur van onoverwinnelijkheid, sinds de oude Romeinen graag een laurierkrans rond hun hoofd drapeerden als ze iets hadden gewonnen of hadden veroverd (of net wilden doen alsof ze iets hadden gewonnen of veroverd). Na maanden experimenteren met receptuur en droogtijden (en marktonderzoek) kwam eind augustus 2020 dan De Beste Laurierdrop Ooit op de Nederlandse markt. Het begin van een onvermijdelijke zegetocht.

But first the best honey in the Netherlands had to be found. Klepper & Klepper found them in the Biesbosch, at a small independent beekeeper who produces honey in an organic way. Without using chemicals and pesticides. And taking into account the environment of plants and bees. The bees happy, nature happy, Klepper & Klepper happy. And you happy. Because just the idea that it is all purely natural, such a licorice tastes better of course. Admit it. But to make a really tasty licorice from pure natural honey, step two is.

Because laurel has a medicinal effect, laurel liquorice has never really disappeared. Laurel licorice works well against ailments such as colds, sore throats and lifeless hair. And of course, this wonderful little plant has the scent of invincibility, since the ancient Romans liked to drape a laurel wreath around their heads when they had won or conquered (or pretended to have won or conquered). De geschiedenis van De Beste Drop Ooit begint in 2015. Of nee, eigenlijk in 1990: toen opende Klepper Sr. (die toen nog gewoon Willem Klepper heette, Klepper Jr. was nog niet eens geboren) zijn snoepkraam op de markt van Alkmaar.
In 2015 staat Klepper Sr. dus 25 jaar op de markt. En ter gelegenheid daarvan, wil hij het lekkerste dropje ooit maken. Om gratis weg te geven aan al zijn klanten. Met zoveel ervaring weet hij precies wat hij zelf lekker vindt en wat de mensen lekker vinden: een volzoet dropje met ergens op de achtergrond een vleugje salmiak voor de nodige pit, en een aangename bite. Niet te stevig, niet te zacht. Een beetje een nostalgische bite zouden we het willen noemen. Doet denken aan drogisterij-drop uit vervlogen tijden.
Hij zet de ingrediënten op papier en gaat er samen met Klepper Jr. mee naar een dropfabrikant. Na een tijdje experimenteren met de hoeveelheden en de droogtijden, hebben ze het voor elkaar: het lekkerste dropje ooit is klaar om de markt op te gaan.
Klepper & Klepper delen uit
Het plan is om 1200 zakjes weg te geven. Die 1200 zakjes zijn binnen een mum van tijd weg. Klepper & Klepper blijken goud in handen te hebben. Zwart goud. De klanten van Klepper Sr. zijn het roerend met Klepper Sr. eens: dit is inderdaad het lekkerste dropje ooit. Met kop en schouders. De mensen blijven terugkomen. Vanuit heel het land. Want zo nu en dan vind je een verdwaalde Zeeuw op de markt van Alkmaar. En daar houden ze ook van drop. Klepper Sr. moest de mensen teleurstellen: het lekkerste dropje ooit was een jubileumdropje. Het zal nooit meer wederkeren.
Maar dat was buiten Klepper Jr. gerekend…
Geen gluten en gelatine, wel heel veel liefde
Klepper Jr. begrijpt dat er meer zat in dit dropje. Veel meer. Vooral ook omdat er twee dingen juist niet in zitten: gluten en gelatine. Gelatine zit niet in de receptuur. En het normaal gebruikte ‘tarwezetmeel’ is vervangen door aardappelzetmeel wat het ook glutenvrij maakt.
Dit dropje, zo begrijpt Klepper Jr. (die commerciële economie had gestudeerd en ja, dan begrijp je dingen. En zie je kansen), dit dropje komt op precies het juiste moment. Geen gluten en gelatine, maar wel heel veel liefde: dat is exact wat mensen willen vandaag de dag. En daar willen ze ook met alle plezier even voor omfietsen.
De Beste Drop Ooit
Het Klepperdropje, zoals het lekkerste dropje ooit in de volksmond is gaan heten, moet een eigen verpakking krijgen. En een naam die de mensen vertelt wat ze kunnen verwachten. Een naam die ook tot de verbeelding spreekt bij mensen die nog nooit van de marktkraam van Klepper Sr. hebben gehoord. En zo bedenken Klepper & Klepper, na rijp beraad, hoe ze dit dropje moeten noemen. Ze besluiten de natuurlijke bravoure, die zo eigen is aan marktlui, niet onder stoelen of banken te schuiven: dit is De Beste Drop Ooit. Niet meer. Niet minder.
Nadat ze een verpakking hebben laten maken die ervoor zorgt dat De Beste Drop Ooit precies de juiste droogheid krijgt, reist Klepper Jr. stad en land af om De Beste Drop Ooit in de betere speciaalzaak te krijgen. Zijn methode is even eenvoudig als gedurfd: hij weet dat het dropje, zodra de mensen het eenmaal hebben geproefd, zichzelf verkoopt. Hij stopt wat dozen in zijn achterbak, bezoekt de speciaalzaken waarvan hij denkt: daar moet ons dropje liggen. Hij geeft elke eigenaar een doosje en zegt daarbij: ‘Probeer het maar. Als je meer wilt hebben, weet je me te vinden.’ Hij geeft z’n kaartje en wandelt de speciaalzaak uit, in de wetenschap dat hij een paar dagen later een telefoontje krijgt. Verkrijgbaar in heel Nederland
En zo is De Beste Drop Ooit binnen een jaar in heel Nederland te vinden. Niet in de supermarkten trouwens. Geregeld hangt er wel een supermarkt aan de lijn. Of zit er eentje in de mailbox. Dat De Beste Drop Ooit niet in hun schappen mag ontbreken. Maar Klepper & Klepper wijzen dergelijke verzoeken altijd vriendelijk doch resoluut af. Ze willen dat De Beste Drop Ooit een beetje exclusief blijft. En ze weten: als je in de supermarkt ligt, willen ze vroeg of laat met je drop gaan stunten. En stunten, zo zegt Klepper Jr. graag, doe je in het circus. Met De Beste Drop Ooit wordt niet gestunt. Het kan trouwens ook heel gevaarlijk zijn, om te stunten met een dropje in je mond. Voor je het weet schiet het in je verkeerde keelgat. Nee, De Beste Drop Ooit nuttig je het liefst zoals je vroeger een goede sigaar nuttigde: zittend in je favoriete stoel.
Het volgende hoofdstuk: de Beste Zoute Drop Ooit
Nadat De Beste Drop Ooit, zoals dat heet, landelijke dekking heeft behaald, is het tijd voor het volgende hoofdstuk. De Beste Drop Ooit verdient ook een zoute variant. En dat is, weet Klepper Sr., geen sinecure. Want zoute drop wordt snel te zout. En zoute drop wordt snel te droog, waardoor het keihard wordt. Naast de perfecte receptuur, moet je dus ook experimenteren met droogtijden.
Maar voordat ze het droplab ingaan om te experimenteren, gaan Klepper & Klepper op zoek naar het beste zout ter wereld. Dat vinden ze uiteindelijk in ongeraffineerd Keltisch zeezout. Dit wordt met de hand gewonnen en is rijk aan mineralen. Volgens sommigen is het daardoor goed voor je bloeddruk. Volgens anderen is dat flauwekul. Maar flauwekul of geen flauwekul: het is het ideale basis-ingrediënt voor De Beste Zoute Drop Ooit. Tijd om het laboratorium op te zoeken.
Het duurt even voordat Klepper Sr. honderd procent tevreden is. En het woord ‘even’ is in dit geval een understatement van het kaliber ‘de zee is nat’. En het mooie van dit dropje: liefhebbers van zoute drop vinden hem heerlijk, maar zelfs mensen die normaal helemaal niet van zoute drop houden, vinden ‘m ook fantastisch! Dat komt doordat er nog een vleugje zoet in zit. Het Keltisch zeezout werkt als smaakversterker. En de bite is ook al zo geweldig. Als ie de verpakking ingaat misschien zelfs nog iets te vers, zodat ie na een paar dagen in de verpakking perfect is: niet hard, maar stevig.
De Beste Honingdrop Ooit
Het succes van De Beste Drop Ooit blijft niet bepaald onopgemerkt. Steeds meer kranten en (vak)tijdschriften berichten erover. De mond-op-mondreclame gaat razendsnel. Winkels zetten dozen met De Beste Drop Ooit in de etalage om klanten naar binnen te halen. Zelfs de Telegraaf bericht uitgebreid over De Beste Drop Ooit. Klepper & Klepper vinden in 2019 dat het tijd is voor een nieuwe uitdaging. En dat is misschien wel de grootste uitdaging tot nu toe: het creëren van De Beste Honingdrop Ooit.
Hoeveel écht lekkere honingdrop bestaat er nu? Niet heel veel. Want ook voor honingdrop geldt: als je de droogtijd niet goed hebt, wordt het al snel een keihard dropje. En als je de receptuur niet goed hebt, wordt het te zoet. Of proef je geen honing. Kortom: het was tijd om de dropfabrikant van Klepper & Klepper weer eens tot wanhoop te drijven.
Maar eerst moest de beste honing van Nederland worden gezocht. Die vonden Klepper & Klepper in de Biesbosch, bij een kleine onafhankelijke imker die op biologische wijze honing produceert. Zonder daarbij gebruik te maken van chemische middelen en pesticiden. En rekening houdend met het leefmilieu van planten en bijen. De bijen blij, de natuur blij, Klepper & Klepper blij. En u blij. Want alleen al door het idee dat het allemaal puur natuur is, smaakt zo’n dropje natuurlijk al lekkerder. Geef maar toe. Maar om van puur natuurlijke honing een echt lekker dropje te maken, is stap twee.
En stap twee duurde inderdaad weer behoorlijk lang. Maar uiteindelijk lukte het. Op 20 mei 2019, op Wereldbijendag, zag De Beste Honingdrop Ooit officieel het levenslicht. Uiteraard weer zonder gluten en gelatine, maar met 12% puur natuurlijke honing uit de Biesbosch.
De grens over
Eind 2019 besluiten Klepper & Klepper dat het tijd is om eens over de grenzen heen te kijken. Want dropland Nederland uit het niets veroveren met een dropje is leuk, het zou nog leuker zijn om de rest van de wereld eens aan de drop te krijgen. We mogen dan wel een uniek land zijn, het is toch vreemd dat ze nergens anders van drop houden. Dat is zo vreemd, dat het hoogstwaarschijnlijk niet klopt. In al die andere landen houden ze ook van drop, ze weten het alleen niet. En ze weten het niet, omdat ze nog niet bekend zijn met De Beste Drop Ooit.
De Beste Laurierdrop Ooit
Terwijl ze over de grens keken, hebben Klepper & Klepper ook hun zinnen gezet op de ontwikkeling van De Beste Laurierdrop Ooit. En ook daarvoor geldt: echt lekkere laurierdrop bestaat er nog niet. Da’s dus precies het soort uitdaging waar Klepper & Klepper graag hun tanden in zetten. Zodat u vervolgens uw tanden in het resultaat kan zetten. In dit geval dus in De Beste Laurierdrop Ooit.
Doordat laurier een geneeskrachtige werking heeft, is laurierdrop nooit echt verdwenen. Laurierdrop doet het goed tegen kwaaltjes als verkoudheid, keelpijn en futloos haar.
