Description Mandravasarotra, more commonly known as Saro, is an endemic plant from Madagascar. This evergreen and very aromatic tree can reach 5m in height. The branches are angular, the leaves alternate and very persistent. Hermaphrodite and regular flowers will produce berry-like fruits. The Saro is very present in the dense and dry forests of the northwest on siliceous soils of the coastal regions below 800 meters of altitude. In Malagasy, its name means "that keeps evil away" or "remedy against spells". This plant is widely used by the populations of the west of the island. In this region of Sakalava, it is called Motrobeatiagnana or Motrobeatianina, which means “great fire in the entrails” because all of its aerial part has a pungent and burning flavor. As there are different dialects, it is also found under the name of Fanalamangidy, "which removes bitterness" or Mangidymanitra, "which smells of bitterness" or Sakarivohazo, "ginger wood" or Sakaihazo "chili wood"... Saro is often used as a substitute for Ravintsara. Its fragrance is quite delicate, more “rosy”. Description Le mandravasarotra, plus communément appelé Saro, est une plante endémique de Madagascar. Cet arbre toujours vert et très aromatique peut atteindre 5m de haut. Les branches sont anguleuses, les feuilles alternes et très persistantes. Les fleurs hermaphrodites et régulières donneront des fruits semblables à des baies. Le Saro est très présent dans les forêts denses et sèches du nord-ouest sur des sols siliceux des régions côtières en-dessous de 800 mètres d’altitude. En malgache, son nom signifie « qui tient le mal éloigné » ou « remède contre les sortilèges ». Cette plante est très utilisée par les populations de l’ouest de l’île. Dans cette région de Sakalava, on l’appelle Motrobeatiagnana ou Motrobeatianina, ce qui signifie « grand feu dans les entrailles » car toute sa partie aérienne a une saveur piquante et brûlante.
