Ses feuilles sont composées et imparipennées. Les petites fleurs sont blanc-jaunâtre et sont disposées en racèmes à l’aisselle des feuilles et regroupées en grappes. Le fruit de Boswellia Carterii présente sous forme de capsule (fruit sec déhiscent composé de nombreuses graines). On dit que la meilleure résine est récoltée en automne, à la suite d’incisions pratiquées en été. C’est ce que l’on appelle l’encens blanc par opposition à l’encens roux, recueilli au printemps après des incisions au cours de l’hiver. On utilise aujourd’hui de plus en plus le Boswellia pour ses nombreuses propriétés mais aussi parce qu'il favorise les états méditatifs. Il est utilisé depuis des milliers d’années par les peuples autochtones comme encens.
