Description Originally from North Africa, the Lentisk Pistachio tree is a shrub growing in the Mediterranean scrub. It can measure from 2 to 5 meters. Its leaves are elliptical. Its flowers, in clusters, are red. Its fruits darken when ripe. From the mastic tree, its resin was once used to embalm the dead and its gum was used as the ancestor of chewing gum. The lentisk produces a resin which flows from its bark, and which, when steam distilled, produces the essential oil of pistachio lentisk. This resin is also called mastic.
