Information

Description Originally from the Mediterranean and the Near East, mountain savory or "winter savory" was introduced to Northern Europe in the 9th century, mainly for food purposes. The Romans and the Greeks also greatly appreciated it because it was, long before the arrival of pepper and chilli, one of the most spicy condiments in the kitchen. The people of Provence, in whose kitchens it has become indispensable, call it "donkey pepper". This small herbaceous perennial plant measures 20 to 40 centimeters. It grows in the mountainous regions around the Mediterranean. It likes calcareous and sunny soils that can be seen in the rockeries at the edge of the paths. Its short stems bear pointed leaves of a beautiful shiny green and white and pink flowers. Well known to the Romans for its taste and medicinal qualities, it was also used to disinfect food in order to avoid intestinal infections. Mountain savory essential oil has a spicy and peppery smell, similar to oregano and can be enjoyed in the kitchen. Synergy with other essential oils Oregano, marjoram, rosemary verbenone, black spruce, thyme vulgaris, wintergreen, lavender, Scots pine...
