BMW E30 M3 The 1986 BMW M3 was developed directly from motorsport and was the first of its kind. When the car was presented at the IAA in Frankfurt in 1985, it was a sensation. And with its numerous championship victories in touring car racing, the BMW M3 quickly became one of the most iconic cars in the BMW M range. Time to shed light on the fascinating history of this legendary series, starting where it all began with the BMW M3 E30. A motorsport story The idea behind the first BMW M3 was to make a racing sedan available as a street version. No one could have predicted what a resounding success the M3 would become - on everyday roads as well as on the world's greatest racetracks. As a homologated touring car model, the BMW M3 finally came to the start in 1986. According to Group A regulations, at least 5,000 roadworthy racing cars had to be sold within twelve months in order to receive homologation. For the road and the track! Before that, the technicians at BMW Motorsport GmbH (the company name of BMW M until 1993) had done a great job. The developers equipped the future M3 with the best components from the BMW Racing Parts shelf. The braking system with ABS and ventilated discs provided stability, while the suspension and damping were designed with racing in mind - without sacrificing suitability for everyday use. The manual transmission also exuded classic racing flair, so drivers found first gear on the bottom left, as is typical in racing. Meanwhile, BMW Motorsport GmbH took over little more than the doors and roof of the BMW 3 Series production car. Light and fast The performance data of the first BMW M3 set a benchmark at the time and remains so today. Thanks to racing technology, the engine climbs precisely to 200 hp - and without a turbo or compressor. Its maximum speed is 6,750 rpm. Thanks to its low weight of around 1,200 kilograms, the M3 reaches 100 km/h after just 6.7 seconds and a top speed of 235 km/h. With the regulated catalytic converter, which was very advanced for the time, the engine lost only a little power to 195 horsepower - a still considerable figure. Ook de handgeschakelde transmissie straalde klassieke raceflair uit, zodat de bestuurders de eerste versnelling linksonder vonden, zoals typisch is in de racerij. Ondertussen nam BMW Motorsport GmbH weinig meer dan de deuren en het dak van de BMW 3 Reeks productie auto over. Car On Paper was founded by 2 friends with a passion for cars. Our joint passion brought us to illustrating our favorite cars and print them on poster format. We started by illustrating and printing the Porsche GT3. Friends and family reacted so enthusiastic to our design and asked us if we could print a version for them as well.
