➤ The sustainable main material: banana fibre
Banana fibre is a natural, untreated plant fibre that feels wonderfully natural. This abundant, renewable raw material comes from banana trees, which are widely cultivated in Indonesia. Its fibrous bark detaches from the trunk as it grows, is then collected and dried under the sun for around a week, creating the intense brown colour naturally. The individual strips are then rolled into the characteristic, approximately 6 mm thick strands, which are processed into traditional basketry by our production partners in Java.
Other materials: cotton, nylon thread, metal frame
➤ Our production partners: Selected according to fair trade criteria
This wall decoration is handmade in Java, Indonesia.
When selecting our local production partners, we emphasise fair payment, safe working conditions and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small family businesses that have a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are all experienced craftspeople of legal age. Older people in particular, who can no longer work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in handicrafts, allowing them to use the skills they have learnt from an early age to earn money and pass on traditional production methods to the younger generation. They have often told us how happy they are to be able to create something meaningful with this work and earn a good living. As all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process generates hardly any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the companies.
➤ The production process: from raw material to finished wall decoration
For our wall decorations, the experienced craftsmen at our production partners in the Indonesian province of Central Java weave the banana fibre into a hand-formed frame made of thin iron rods with a great deal of patience and dexterity. This ensures that they retain their stable, round shape. The filigree star pattern made of white cotton is then embroidered on using a needle. In total, it takes around two hours to make a wall decoration.

The name “Soeji” (pronounced soo-ji) comes from Javanese and means something like “pure” or “unadulterated” - exactly what our products are all about. When we came across several small wickerwork workshops during a stay in one of the founder's home country Indonesia in the summer of 2019, we quickly recognized the potential of these great products. We got into conversation with the owners and it became clear that they were interested in realizing our designs. Since then we have designed and produced many great products based on traditional patterns, put together a small but beautiful range of products and finally made them available to a larger audience in our online shop in June 2020. We only use natural, environmentally friendly materials (which otherwise would often have ended up in the trash since they are considered waste products or weeds) and the work of experienced Indonesian artisans for our home and fashion accessories. Every sale of our hand crafted products thus sustainably supports rural communities to make a living. Especially elderly people, who can no longer work in agriculture, benefit greatly from the jobs that these workshops create. Thanks to our close cooperation with the local small producers without intermediaries and long communication channels, we can guarantee very good working conditions and wages and precisely track the origin of the raw materials. A pleasant side effect for you are fair prices, regarding which you can be sure that a lot of it will get through to the producers and little to international corporations.
