Keychain heart flat design - soapstone
Information
All of our soapstone products come from Tabaka/Kenya. Tabaka is a town with around 10,000 inhabitants and is located around 25km from Kisii (around 100,000 inhabitants), hence the common name “soapstone from Kisii” (although you cannot buy soapstone anywhere in Kisii town itself). Soapstone (steatite) is a soft natural stone. The color of the stones varies between white, gray, yellow and reddish tones and is often crossed by beautiful veins. The raw material is mined locally in various quarries. Mortising chisels are primarily used for this purpose. The carvers are i.d. Usually self-employed artists who specialize in one product area. The orders then come from the approximately 100 small dealers (small family businesses or self-help groups) on site. The carver uses chisels, knives, scrapers and sandpaper as tools. The product delivered to the dealers by the carver is still “angular and angular”. The fine grinding, washing of the stone, waxing and polishing is then usually carried out by women from the family at the dealer. The 100% handwork causes the differences in shape. Breite: 3,5cm

All of our soapstone artifacts come from Tabaka / Kisii. The quite soft natural stone is worked 100% by hand - beaten, carved, sanded, polished and sometimes also painted. We work on site with 26 producers, who in turn pass their orders on to the mostly independent carvers / artists. The color of the stone varies between white, gray, yellowish and reddish shades and is mostly interspersed with different grains. This makes each product unique due to its shape and color. I am on site in Tabaka 3 times a year. During this time it can happen that the order is delivered with a little delay.
